Perhaps never before have supporters of Vladimir Putin expressed such dissatisfaction with his actions. From one of the main propagandists, Vladimir Soloviov, to members of the State Duma and pro-war bloggers on the Ukrainian front, several voices loyal to the Kremlin have criticized the authorities for blocking or slowing down the Telegram app.
A pro-war blogger accused the authorities of undermining the Russian army’s command system by limiting Telegram, shortly after Ukraine allegedly restricted the use of Starlink by Russian forces.
In turn, Vladimir Soloviov, host of the show “Moscow. Kremlin. Putin”, complained about the decrease in the number of subscribers after the “slowdown” of Telegram and claimed that the actions of the Russian communications regulatory authority, Roskomnadzor, reduced his audience without offering a “worthy alternative”. However, almost simultaneously, he supported the blocking of Telegram, arguing that “color revolutions” would be organized through foreign messengers.
“This is the first case where we see such an internal rupture in communities loyal to the Kremlin,” declared for Bloomberg Tatiana Stanovaia, senior researcher at the Carnegie Center in Berlin for the Study of Russia and Eurasia.
According to her, Telegram has replaced the main media institutions in Russia. Those interested in politics, as well as a large part of the Russian elite, follow Telegram channels to keep up with events.
