Romania: Moscow’s disinformation, more dangerous than Covid-19
The lies of Russian propaganda are found in simple ideas: Putin has taken action, the EU is falling, NATO is abandoning, Russia is the last salvation! That’s what some of the aberrations spread by fake-news factories, under the Kremlin’s command, soundlike this, just to aggravate the impact of the new type of coronavirus, to generate panic and sow distrust, writes the Press Trust of the Romanian Ministry of National Defence. In this context, the rational voices explaining that Russia, under the false pretext of helping Italy, is on the verge of establishing a military bridgehead in the center of the Mediterranean with the aim of European and Euro-Atlantic destabilization.
By giving up the usual channels (like Sputnik), which have proved to be a resounding failure in the mission of spreading fake news, the disinformation center, based in St. Petersburg, has chosen the direct targeting of social networks, giving up the classic intermediaries, already targeted by the intelligence services of the target states. It is clear that the Russian Federation has begun to carry out an aggressive disinformation campaign against the EU, NATO, and on time, against some western European states, but, predominantly, against the states that provide the eastern flank of Western civilization.
A significant disinformation campaign is underway from Russian state media and pro-Kremlin news providers on Covid-19, states in an internal European Union document. The overall aim of the Kremlin disinformation is to exacerbate the health crisis in Western countries… in line with the Kremlin’s broader strategy of trying to undermine European societies, t¸he document prepared by the European External Action Service says.
Despite Russian propaganda, distributed massively, indiscriminately, in particular, distributed on social networks, the Italian daily La Stampa, drew attention to the futility of the largest part of humanitarian aid sent by the Russian Federation to Italy, for the fight against the coronavirus. On. March 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin had a conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte by telephone, after which 15 Il-76 military aircraft were sent to Italy.
According to La Stampa, in addition to humanitarian aid, Russia has also sent specialists to Italy, which are in fact high-ranking military personnel, not doctors. As a result, 80% of Russia’s humanitarian aid is absolutely useless or of little significance in the fight against the coronavirus in Italy. For example, Russia sent equipment for the disinfection of territories and military technology. On Saturday, members of Russian special forces disinfected a hostel in the Bergamo region of Lombardy, northern Italy, where 35 people died from the coronavirus at the beginning of the pandemic, writes Truth.
The soldiers, arriving in large military trucks, flying the Russian flag, disinfected the Honegger nursing home, which is located in Albino, a village surrounded by mountains where 143 people died. We don’t refuse help, but we also have to be very careful. The Mediterranean, both eastern and central, is a battleground for hegemony, from Syria to Libya.
We must avoid a health crisis becoming a politico-military affair, warned General Marco Bertolini, former head of the Inter-Forces Operational politico Command, quoted by La Stampa. Thus, it is obvious that the Russian Federation pursues its political and diplomatic interests, despite assurances from the Kremlin, which vehemently denies that, by offering help, Moscow is trying to push for the annulment of European sanctions against it.
International aid has always had a dual nature: humanitarian and soft-power. It gives international brilliance and builds or cements alliances- according to an analysis by the Carnegie Center in Moscow. Russian army cross half of Italy, a NATO country, and images of the Moscow soldiers studying the Italian map, as if it were war, were spread at great speed by the Moscow Defense Ministry, which is coordinating the operation.
The Russians have used Italy for energy interests and for someone to plead their case within the EU, believes geopolitical specialist and former presidential adviser for national security, Iulian Fota. At the moment, Western interests are under attack in Italy. (…) Let us see if Europe and the US will respond to these attacks or if we will witness a new fold because so far the West has lost some of its space of influence in the Middle East. It would be the first time the West would retreat and lose influence in a space that traditionally belonged to it, such as Italy that hosts the Vatican, the papal state, the analyst for Free Europe said.
Moreover, the Swedish internal and counterterrorism intelligence agency, Sapo, has seen an increase in activities aimed at weakening the state, one example being the current pandemic with the new coronavirus, during which a number of foreign powers have multiplied attempts to influence public sentiments, the agency’s head, Klas Friberg, said at the presentation of the annual report. This is a classic example of how foreign powers are trying to use ongoing crises in their own interests, noted menţionat Sapo analyst Kennet Andersson. According to the report, Russia poses the greatest danger.
The fact that the European Union has abandoned Italy is a lie and is part of the category of misinformation disseminated by Moscow in the public space. The European Parliament has approved a EUR 37 billion aid package for the Member States to fight the coronavirus pandemic. The money will be used to support health systems, small and medium-sized enterprises, and other vulnerable economic sectors.
The Member States of the European Union will also be able to access another EUR 800 million from the EU Solidarity Fund, originally intended for natural disaster support. The European Union also organized the centralized purchase of medical equipment for the first time and also set up a strategic reserve of medical equipment.
Importantly, the RFI announces, the European Central Bank has prepared a total of EUR970 billion to support the economy of the 27 Member States by buying public or private bonds and government bonds And, as far as Italy is concerned, the country severely affected by the coronavirus crisis, the Italian economy will be part of a separate aid plan from the European institutions, apart from the amounts it has under the measures ordered so far.
