Vladimir Putin has once again stoked tensions with the West, announcing that Russia is on the verge of unveiling a new “wonder-weapon”, which he claims is already in the final stages of testing. The statement, made following a visit to Tajikistan, was interpreted as a cryptic message with a nuclear undertone, given that Washington is not rushing to negotiate a new strategic arms reduction treaty, according to Kyiv Post.
On Friday, Vladimir Putin hinted that Moscow is preparing to reveal a new weapon from the category of those “once announced”, a statement with a warning of a nuclear threat to the West.
“We are in the final stage and I believe that soon we will have the opportunity to announce the new weapon that we once mentioned,” Putin said in a discussion with the press, following his visit to Tajikistan, reports the Russian agency RIA Novosti.
The statement came in the context where the Russian president criticized the United States’ refusal to accept a new round of negotiations for the strategic arms reduction treaty (START).
“We are ready to negotiate if this is acceptable and advantageous for the American side. If not, then not. It would be a pity, because nothing would remain in the field of deterrence regarding offensive strategic weapons,” Putin added.
