The Kremlin leader, Vladimir Putin, could trigger a wave of contract killings across Europe, against the backdrop of the intensification of Russia’s hybrid war against NATO, warn security experts.
Moscow is already carrying out numerous sabotage operations in one of the key countries of the Alliance: from drones loaded with explosives and attacks on energy targets, to plots against leaders in the defense industry. According to the British publication The Express, the transition of this campaign to targeted assassinations on Western territory could just be a matter of time.
Germany has become the main target. In recent weeks, explosive-laden drones have been detected near Ukrainian cargo planes at Leipzig/Halle airport. One of the devices collided with a plane close to landing, forcing it to change its trajectory. A few days later, a third drone, equipped with explosives and a detonator, was found attached to a tree.
Berlin has officially attributed responsibility to Moscow, condemning its dangerous behavior and irresponsible attempts to cause significant damage.
Airports, government IT systems, energy infrastructure, and defense objectives have already been targeted by probable Russian sabotage. The German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, had previously warned that his country is under special attention from Putin.
The influential German deputy Roderich Kiesewetter has made a grim forecast.
“We will probably see news about assassinations of high-ranking representatives in our defense industry,” he declared.
Asked how far Russia might go, Kiesewetter added: “We will face an increase in state terrorism on German territory. Russia will not acknowledge any connection with this, but we will see that the traces lead to Moscow.”
