Russia is investing millions of rubles in the modernization of air-raid shelters in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, without any public announcement of the works. The investments, revealed by public procurement data, come in the context of escalating Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.
Tens of millions of rubles have been allocated for the repair of shelters in several districts of Moscow and from the subway stations in Saint Petersburg, while Ukrainian drones hit another Russian refinery on Sunday, and the war initiated by the Kremlin in Ukraine has already entered its fifth year.
The public procurement records, quoted by the independent Russian press, show that at the beginning of September, 39 million rubles (approximately 400,000 euros) were allocated for the rehabilitation of nine objectives in three districts of the southwest administrative region of Moscow, an area where there are dozens of research institutes and defense industry contractors.
The works are expected to be completed by November 30 and target entrances, interior compartments, doors, and utility systems, including water and electricity supply, sewage, ventilation, and communications, reports Euronews.
Other funds have been allocated for shelters in the Novogireyevo district, in the east of Moscow, and in the area known as New Moscow, a comprehensive renovation of a shelter built in 1971 is planned, which even has its own diesel power station.
