The Romanian consul in Saint Petersburg has been declared persona non-grata in Russia. The decision was announced on Thursday by the diplomacy in Moscow, following the summoning of Ambassador Cristian Istrate.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “during the meeting, the Russian side notified about declaring the interim manager of the General Consulate of Romania in Saint Petersburg persona non grata, specifically regarding the Russian side’s decision to withdraw consent for the establishment of the respective consular post”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has labeled the Russian side’s reaction as “predictable,” reports hotnews.ro. This comes after Romania closed the Russian Consulate in Constanța and expelled the head of the institution on May 29, 2026.

The decision of Bucharest came about as a result of a drone falling onto a residential block in Galați.
