Two ships carrying hundreds of thousands of barrels of Russian diesel bound for the United States under a deal that sparked fierce criticism in Ukraine and Europe have changed course, the Financial Times reports, as cited by The Moscow Times.

These obstacles jeopardize President Donald Trump’s plan to resume fuel imports from Russia as part of a controversial deal with his counterpart, Vladimir Putin, aimed at lowering fuel prices in the United States.

The oil tanker Leruo, owned by a Hong Kong company and sailing under the flag of Sierra Leone, is now heading for Brazil, according to the FT. Meanwhile, the Russian tanker Talisman has left the Atlantic Ocean and entered the Mediterranean Sea, where it is currently off the coast of Algeria. The vessel has no new destination and is “awaiting instructions”.

The change of course suggests that no buyer wants the cargo or that it has no confirmed port of discharge, according to the British financial newspaper.
