The company SpaceX has blocked, at Ukraine’s request, the use of satellite communications Starlink by Russian troops for coordinating attack drones used in the destruction of Ukrainian civil infrastructure. The announcement was made by the company’s founder, Elon Musk, in response to a message from the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Mihailo Fedorov.
“It seems that the measures we have taken to stop the unauthorized use of Starlink by Russia are working,” Musk wrote.
Fedorov confirmed that the initial measures have already started to work and thanked SpaceX for their cooperation, mentioning that work is still ongoing on additional steps.
The measures taken are of a technical nature. According to information published by the “Ukrainian Armed Forces Cartographer” channel, the maximum connection speed for Starlink terminals used on drones has been limited to 75 km/h. Given that Russian drones reach speeds of 180–270 km/h, this restriction makes the use of satellite link impossible. The adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense for technologies, Serghei Beskrestnov, clarified that the current solution is temporary, and broader and better calibrated measures require additional time for implementation.
