The US has relocated some of their air defense systems from Europe to the Middle East, amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, stated General Alex Grynkewich, the commander of American forces in Europe, in front of congressmen.

The commander of the US European Command (EUCOM), who also leads the allied forces in Europe, explained during the hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee that he used “a part” of EUCOM’s air defense capabilities to protect “some of the NATO allies” in the eastern Mediterranean, reports News.ro.

When asked by Senator Angus King if it is true that the systems were moved as a result of the conflict, Grynkewich simply answered: “Yes, sir, absolutely”.

In the same hearing, the general also addressed the tragedy that occurred on February 28, when an American attack hit the Shajareh Tayyiba elementary school in Iran, killing at least 168 children and 14 teachers, according to Iranian state media. Grynkewich admitted that the incident could be the result of “a series of errors and mistakes”.

“At the operational level, both from my previous experience in the US Central Command and from the current one in the US European Command, I can assure you that we have solid standards that we respect and that we check and update the images, we update our context on the target and refresh the information periodically to determine the risk of causing civilian casualties and to avoid any collateral concerns that may exist”, Grynkewich declared.

He further emphasized that the political decisions of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “have not affected” in any way his ability to prevent harm to civilians.
