A European Commissioner will participate this week in the inaugural meeting of the Council for Peace, an initiative recently launched by US President Donald Trump, without the European Union joining the new structure for the moment, announced the European community bloc on Monday, according to AFP and Reuters, quoted by Agerpres. Romania and Italy will participate as observer countries, while Hungary and Bulgaria have announced that they want to become full members.
The Council also includes Bahrain, Morocco, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Mongolia, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan.
The European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suica, will travel to Washington for the meeting scheduled for Thursday, to present the European position on the situation in the Gaza Strip.
“She will attend the Council for Peace meeting for the specific part dedicated to Gaza. The European Commission, I want to emphasize, does not become a member of the ‘Council for Peace'”, declared Guillaume Mercier, spokesperson for the European Commission for the Mediterranean, enlargement, and international partnerships.
