The European Parliament has decided to suspend the ratification process of the trade agreement between the European Union and the USA, following recent threats from the American President, Donald Trump, confirmed on Tuesday by the main European parliamentary political groups, according to AFP, quoted by Agerpres.
There is a “majority agreement” among political groups to freeze the trade agreement concluded last year between the United States and the EU, stated the leader of the S&D group, Iratxe Garcia Perez, in front of journalists.
The European People’s Party (EPP) group, the largest in the European Parliament, confirmed the suspension of discussions regarding this agreement. Concluded last summer, it provides for a 15% customs duty on European exports to the USA and the abolition of duties on American exports to the European Union.
“Not allowing American companies to have duty-free access to the European market is a very powerful tool,” declared on Tuesday the leader of the EPP group, the German Manfred Weber.
