The European Union has approved new rules regarding the access of Ukrainian men of military age to the temporary protection system. The measure was adopted at the request of the authorities in Kiev.
The new provisions adopted by EU states aim to limit easy access to protection for individuals trying to avoid military service in the context of the war between Ukraine and Russia, reports dpa, cited by Agerpres.
Who will be affected by the new rules
According to the agreement, Ukrainian men aged between 23 and 60 years old will be able to benefit from the European temporary protection scheme only if they can demonstrate that they have fulfilled their military obligations or have been officially exempted from military service.
The measure will apply exclusively to those who are entering the territory of the European Union for the first time.
In contrast, those targeted will still be able to submit individual asylum applications. However, the procedure involves stricter conditions and offers fewer chances of obtaining a residence permit and international protection.
What documents should be presented
According to the new rules, men of conscription age will need to present documents issued by Ukrainian authorities to attest their military status.
Among the accepted documents are a passport with the exit stamp from Ukraine or official papers confirming the fulfillment of military service or legal exemption from this obligation.
