The chief of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, wants US President Donald Trump to exert a greater influence over his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, according to DPA citing Agerpres on Monday.
“I believe that the United States also has a role to put more pressure on Russia to stop this war,” said the former head of the Estonian government at a meeting with several European foreign ministers in Madrid, dedicated to the war between Russia and Ukraine and the efforts of the US President towards peace.
Russia must accept a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine and take a step forward, which could include, for example, repatriation of Ukrainian children or the release of prisoners of war, Kallas said. The meeting in Madrid was also attended by foreign ministers from Poland, France, and Spain, as well as European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius. The latter called for the immediate implementation of the recently presented ReArm Europe strategy by the European Commission.
At the end of the meeting, the signing of a joint declaration by the participants is planned. The European Union has consistently expressed its unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
