The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, mentioned on Sunday a possible new meeting with the American delegation next Thursday, February 26, in Switzerland, to discuss the nuclear program.
“I believe there are still good chances to reach a diplomatic solution from which both sides can benefit,” he stated in an interview with the American channel CBS, reports Agerpres.
“We continue the negotiations, while we work on the elements of an agreement and a first draft of the text” in view of a new meeting with American negotiators, “probably Thursday, in Geneva”, indicated Abbas Araghchi.
However, the Minister insisted that Iran “has the right to defend itself” and that, in the face of an “act of aggression”, any response is “justified and legitimate.”
“Our missiles cannot reach American soil. Therefore, obviously, we need to find another solution (…) and strike the American base in the region,” Araghchi repeated, without specifying which base he was referring to.
“For now, we are only negotiating on the nuclear issue and no other subject is being addressed,” the Iranian minister added.
Multiple sources indicate that a military escalation in US-Iran relations is more likely than a diplomatic solution, with Washington deploying one of the largest forces in the region since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
