Before the American-Israeli attacks on Iran, Washington mobilized in the region the largest concentration of forces and some of the most sophisticated weapon systems of recent decades. It was a clear signal that the White House administration was preparing for a high-intensity conflict.
President Donald Trump had previously warned that the United States is “ready to attack”, and Saturday’s strikes – which led to the death of the supreme Iranian leader – turned this display of force into a military operation with a declared objective.
On Sunday, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the military structure responsible for American operations in the Middle East, published a list of the equipment used so far in what the Pentagon has called “Operation Epic Fury”.
Among the most formidable platforms used are the B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, aircraft with a “batwing” profile, valued at over a billion dollars each. Designed to evade radar detection, they can carry both conventional and nuclear weapons, having intercontinental range and air refueling capability.
Last year, seven of the 19 B-2 bombers carried out a 34-hour round-trip mission from their base in Missouri to strike Iranian nuclear complexes, using high-power penetrating bombs. In the current campaign, according to CENTCOM, 2,000-pound bombs were used to attack Iranian ballistic missile installations.
