The supremacy that Western states such as the United Kingdom have exercised for decades in the Atlantic Ocean is under an increasingly pronounced threat from Russia, warned the head of the British Royal Navy.

The government in London claims that it has recorded a 30% increase in the number of Russian ships considered a potential threat to British territorial waters in the last two years. Several such ships were intercepted in 2024.

General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, the Chief of Staff of the Royal Navy, stated in a speech delivered Monday in central London that the strong position that Britain and its allies have held in the Atlantic “is in danger”.

“We resist, but we are at the limit,” Jenkins said. “There is no room for complacency.”

Increasingly provocative incidents near British waters

Last month, Defense Minister John Healey accused the Yantar ship – described by officials as a Russian information-gathering ship – of directing lasers at British pilots on a monitoring mission. Healey called the incident “extremely dangerous”.

Yantar had also been observed earlier in the year off the British coast and intercepted near French waters.

“Yantar is just the visible part – and not the one that worries me the most,” Jenkins warned. “What happens under the waves is the real concern.”
