The Central District Court of Chelyabinsk has granted the request of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation and decided to transfer 63 apartments, which belonged to the former governor of the Chelyabinsk region, Mikhail Yurevich, former State Duma deputy, Vadim Belousov, and their relatives, to the administration of the Ministry of Defense. The information was confirmed by the court’s press service.
These are homes located in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Chelyabinsk, and other cities. Previously, these properties belonged to the former owners of the “Makfa” pasta company, which has since been nationalized (including Yurevich). As early as January of this year, the court decided to recover from the defendants 19.7 billion rubles (about 195 million euros) and transfer 100% of the “Mishkinsky Produkt” company to the state. The outstanding balance is 18.9 billion rubles (approximately 187 million euros).
The Ministry of Defense proposed that the confiscated homes be used for the needs of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, especially for housing military personnel. The court supported the initiative, invoking the position of the Constitutional Court, according to which goods confiscated in anti-corruption trials can be used “in the interest of society and for the restoration of social justice”. The decision is not yet final.
This apartment confiscation is part of a broader campaign to seize the assets of Russian officials. Thus, in the spring, the Regional Court of Krasnodar decided to confiscate the assets of the former deputy head of the regional MChS, Sergey Simonenko, worth 360 million rubles (approximately 3.6 million euros). The list of assets included 55 real estate properties and 32 cars. Checks showed that the official had registered the assets in the names of intermediaries and his family members.
