The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, believes that his army continues to occupy territories in Ukraine and, therefore, has no intention of stopping the war.
“Moscow, most likely, is still convinced that it will achieve victory on the battlefield and will impose a peace agreement on its own terms,” states the annual report of the US intelligence services on threats to the country.
At the same time, the continuation of the war could lead to the expansion of the conflict into a broader confrontation with NATO, including direct threats to the United States of America, according to the intelligence services.
Meanwhile, in the past year, the Russian army has advanced in Ukraine at the slowest pace not only since the beginning of this war, but also in over 100 years, according to the assessment of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.
Nevertheless, Russia has maintained its advantage, and as long as it continues to occupy Ukrainian territories, Moscow “sees no serious reasons to stop hostilities”.
Experts warn that the war in Ukraine – or another conflict – could trigger a “spiral of escalation” leading to direct confrontations with the United States, including the use of nuclear weapons. In the view of the intelligence services, this represents “the most dangerous threat” that Russia poses to the US.
