US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he intends to ask European countries to reimburse the US for the military aid and ammunition sent to Ukraine during the war with Russia. The White House leader also suggested that Washington has temporarily halted arms sales to allies in order to replenish its own stocks, writes Reuters.
In a social media post, Trump criticized information suggesting that American ammunition stocks have significantly decreased due to the war with Iran. However, he stated that the United States has increased its production and is replenishing its reserves.
“We keep them for ourselves, for the USA, instead of selling them to others, but sales to allies will resume soon,” Trump wrote.
The American president then returned to the aid given to Ukraine and NATO during the Biden administration and said that Europe should have paid for it.
“Hundreds of billions of dollars were given to Ukraine and NATO, for free, money that Europe would have paid if they had been asked. But we will ask for this money, even if it is late,” said Trump, who blamed his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden for this situation.
Last year, the United States and NATO finalized the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List initiative, through which European countries pay for American weapons delivered to Ukraine.
