A Japanese reporter asked Donald Trump on Thursday, in the Oval Office, during a bilateral meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, why he did not inform his allies about his plan to attack Iran. The US President said he did not want to “signal too much” because he wanted the attack to be a “surprise”.

Then, Trump joked about World War II, asking the reporter why Japan “did not announce the attack on Pearl Harbor to the US”. Sanae Takaichi smiled awkwardly, sighed, and shifted in her chair as this exchange of remarks took place.

“One thing is that you don’t want to signal too much. You know, when we intervene, we intervene very hard and I didn’t tell anyone about this because I wanted the surprise,” Trump said during a bilateral meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, in the Oval Office.

“Who knows better than Japan what a surprise means?” Trump said. “Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor? OK?”, he added.
