A “division” of the Donbas region between Russians and Ukrainians, as recently suggested by Donald Trump, would represent a dangerous precedent for Romania, warned retired General Cristian Barbu on Monday, in an exclusive statement to Antena 3 CNN.
“If things will be as those at the White House are now setting them, it means for us Europeans, that if Russia steps in and gains a handful of our territories through war, then that land will belong to Russia,” said General Barbu. “This means that we will have to continue to defend ourselves, to have a very clear policy of protecting ourselves in all areas, not only territorial ones, but also those in space and cyberspace.”
For us, it means a special effort, an additional concern, which, until 1-2 years ago, we did not see to this extent
Donald Trump said that the quickest way to end the war in Ukraine would be the “division” of the Donbas region. This region, heavily fortified by Ukrainians, is composed of the Luhansk oblast (almost entirely occupied by the Russian army) and Donetsk (about 70% under Russian control).
During a meeting at the White House with the leader from Kiev, Trump pressured Volodymyr Zelensky to give up large portions of territory.
“Leave it as it fell,” Trump reported in a statement to reporters aboard Air Force One. “It’s already cut now,” Trump clarified regarding Donbas, adding “to leave things as they are now.”
“They can start negotiations a bit later, regarding the demarcation line,” said Trump. “But now, both sides need to stop at the contact line, go home, stop fighting and stop killing people.”
