The presence of Russian warships and security in the Baltic Sea region remains a particular concern for the German navy, declared on Thursday the German Vice Admiral Axel Deertz, on the sidelines of a conference held in Kiel, in northern Germany, reports dpa.
“This is an area where the security situation has noticeably worsened, where a potential adversary is quite active and behaves in an increasingly aggressive manner,” warned the German vice admiral at the Seapower Symposium in Kiel.
Within this forum, senior officers from Germany, the USA, and other NATO member countries are discussing ways to protect Europe’s northern flank, notes dpa, quoted by Agerpres. In recent days, about 6,000 soldiers from 15 countries have trained aboard 20 ships during the NATO exercise “Baltops” in the Baltic Sea.
This 55th edition of the “Baltops” exercises was, as usual, led by the US Navy. The security of the Baltic Sea is crucial for the security of Europe and, therefore, also for that of the USA, declared Vice Admiral Jeffrey T. Anderson, the commander of the US Sixth Fleet.
