NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made an unannounced visit to the city of Odesa on Tuesday, April 15, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski. During the visit, Rutte reaffirmed NATO’s strong support for Ukraine, especially as the war initiated by Russia continues to claim civilian casualties.”NATO’s support is unwavering. The Ukrainian people deserve true peace – real security and safety in their own country and in their own homes,” Rutte stated in a joint press conference with Zelenski, according to The Guardian. He strongly condemned the recent attack on the city of Sumy, calling it “simply outrageous” and part of “a terrible pattern of attacks on civilian targets and infrastructure.”Rutte also pointed out that although some have questioned NATO’s support in recent months, “there should be no doubt: our support remains strong.”President Zelenski mentioned the Dutch official’s visit on his personal X page. The NATO leader confirmed that he discussed “important negotiations” with the Ukrainian leader, as well as President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the conflict with both Ukraine and Russia.”These discussions are not easy, especially in light of recent violence, but we all support President Trump’s efforts for peace,” he added.”Again, we stand with you. And we await the day when the brave men and women of this incredible country can live in freedom without fear,” the NATO leader conveyed. On the same day, April 15, President Zelenski announced that representatives from Ukraine, Great Britain, France, and Turkey were meeting in Turkey to discuss security issues in the Black Sea region.
