An event organized at a university in Russia, meant to attract students to the so-called “drone troops“, ended awkwardly: a soldier lost control of the device during the demonstration, and the images quickly made their way to the internet.
An unexpected incident took place during a recruitment session organized by Russian military personnel at a university. They had come to convince students to enlist on a contract basis and to offer them a “masterclass” in drone operation.
However, the demonstration turned into a public failure. In the images that appeared online, it can be seen how the soldier controls the drone with a remote control, but the device makes several abrupt movements, one of which ends with a strong impact on the ceiling. As a result of the blow, the drone is damaged.
The soldier tries to keep his cool, picks up the device, and shows it to those present, while laughter can be heard from the students in the room.
Recruitment, carried out at the direction of the authorities
According to DW, which cites sources close to the situation, recruitment campaigns for the “drone troops” are carried out in Russian universities at the request of the authorities. According to published information, the initiative would have been transmitted to the leadership of the educational institutions by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Chernyshenko, reports Dialog.
In particular, students at risk of expulsion are targeted. They are promised one-year contracts, military service “near the front line”, substantial payments, and the possibility of continuing their studies for free upon return.
