Ukraine has begun to use robotic turrets equipped with artificial intelligence to take down the new Russian jet-powered drones, faster and more difficult to intercept, announced the Ukrainian Air Forces on Monday.
For months, Kiev has been seeking solutions to intercept the new Russian drones that are hitting the Ukrainian capital, while also dealing with a severe shortage of suitable ammunition to shoot them down, reports France24 and AFP.
Russia has begun to use jet engine drones that are newer, move faster, and are harder to intercept than traditional models, based on the Iranian Shahed drones.
In the context of Ukraine’s efforts to respond to this threat, “robotic turrets are now installed on bridges”, declared Colonel Yuri Ignat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Forces, for the national television.
“There have already been downings” of such drones, including the Geran-5 model, larger, faster and more powerful, he specified for the national television.
In a statement to AFP, Ignat explained that the new turrets, observed by AFP journalists in the capital of Ukraine, use “optical vision and artificial intelligence to eliminate the human factor and carry out strikes”.
Sergii Beskrestnov, technology advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, explained on Telegram, at the end of last week, that the new automated turrets represent an “innovative Ukrainian solution that shoots down (drones) using machine guns controlled by artificial intelligence”.
He specified that 12 such towers have been installed in Kiev, adding that “more towers will be installed in the future”.
