This strait separates Yemen, from the Arabian Peninsula, from Djibouti and Eritrea, from the Horn of Africa and is the gateway to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. A Yemeni military leader recently warned that blocking this strategic route could be one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/Detail\/2026\/03\/14\/765379\/Yemeni-commander--Closure-of-Bab-el-Mandeb-Strait-among-Ansarullah-s-steps-in-support-of-Iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">action options of the Houthi rebels<\/a>, Iran&#8217;s allies in the region. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has already caused a rise in oil prices and disturbances in the financial markets now in a period of systemic risk similar or even more severe than the 2008 crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The situation could worsen even more, if the passage through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is blocked by the Houthi rebels, supported by Iran and who currently control the Yemeni coast of the strait, <a href=\"https:\/\/moldova.europalibera.org\/a\/un-nou-punct-fierbinte-al-razboiului-din-iran-stramtoarea-bab-al-mandab-in-largul-coastelor-yemenului\/33708622.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports Radio Free Europe Moldova (RFEM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 6% of global oil maritime transports pass through this strait, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/international\/analysis\/special-topics\/World_Oil_Transit_Chokepoints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Energy Information Administration<\/a>.
