More manipulative information published by the French language magazine <\/strong>Omerta, <\/em><\/strong>considered a tool of Kremlin propaganda in France, has been actively distributed in the Republic of Moldova. Dozens of accounts, pages and social media channels, as well as some politicians and propagandist internet users, have promoted claims that present Moldova as a “playground” for Emmanuel Macron and George Soros and a “geopolitical laboratory” of the “EU interference” in its internal affairs. At the same time, the government in Chisinau is presented as a “mafia” and “organized crime”. In reality, the content of the articles published by <\/strong>Omerta<\/em><\/strong> is not backed by factual evidence, and many of the ideas align with the false narratives of Kremlin propaganda.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The edition<\/a> of the Omerta<\/em> magazine, published<\/a> in April, contains several articles dedicated to Moldova, including interviews with two opposition politicians (Vlad Filat and Vasile Costiuc). The articles abound in speculations, manipulations, and even falsehoods on several subjects.<\/p>\n\n

For example, an article asks whether Maia Sandu’s election win is a “manufactured political victory”. The same piece asserts that the 2025 parliamentary elections were overshadowed by the “shadow of American interference”, while “Europe has taken control” following the closure of the American organization USAID<\/em>. The so-called influence of the European Union is substantiated by listing the visits of high-ranking European officials to Chisinau and the financial assistance of approximately 1.9 billion euros provided to Moldova for the period 2025-2027. At the same time, Russia’s proven meddling in the elections is omitted.<\/p>\n\n

“Television channels are shut down, the press is kept under strict control, and opponents are subjected to judicial harassment and intimidation. Democracy is weakened,” states another article, signed by Charles d’Anjou, the founder of the magazine.<\/p>\n\n

“Putin’s Fan”. Who is behind the magazine?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Omerta<\/em> is a far-right magazine with a pro-Kremlin editorial line, launched in 2022, shortly after the ban<\/a> by European justice of the propaganda channel Russia Today (RT) France<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n

Important and credible media institutions in France (such as Le Monde<\/em><\/a>, Lib\u00e9ration<\/em><\/a> or Mediapart<\/em><\/a>) present Omerta<\/em> as a tool of Russian propaganda<\/a>, with an agenda based on conservative and geopolitical themes.<\/p>\n\n

The magazine is led by R\u00e9gis Le Sommier<\/strong>, a former journalist at RT France<\/em>, and was founded by Charles d\u2019Anjou,<\/strong> a businessman who operates in Moscow and has connections<\/a> with the Russian security environment<\/a>. Charles d\u2019Anjou also worked at RT France<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n

Referring to the magazine Omerta<\/em>, journalist Dan Alexe<\/strong>, former correspondent<\/a> of Europa Liber\u0103<\/em> in Brussels, highlights the fact that “some of the signatories of the articles, such as Charles d’Anjou, are known right-wing extremists who have taken refuge in Russia.”<\/p>\n\n

“Ever since the invasion and annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, classic propaganda TV channels and web platforms such as Sputnik and Russia Today have been banned by almost all European countries, several new forms of insidious propaganda have emerged. Some are too obvious and perhaps less convincing. (…) More recently, however, all sorts of publications have appeared in French, English or Italian, signed with the names of Western journalists, which can deceive a naive audience.”<\/p>\n\n

Such a “magazine”, with a title that should already be suspect “Omerta” (“omerta” is the oath of silence within the Italian mafia), claims to write about external interferences (Soros, Macron, EU) in the politics of R. Moldova”, stated Dan Alexe in a correspondence<\/a> for Radio Moldova<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n

“The problem is that Russian propaganda texts in French or English are picked up<\/a> by some Moldovan activists like Vitalie G\u0103murari, the former spokesman of the PD, when the party was led by Vladimir Plahotniuc, or a certain Andrei Ioni\u021b\u0103,” added the journalist.<\/p>\n\n

The statements in the magazine, amplified and exaggerated <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

“The Russian propaganda texts in French”, that is, the ideas published by Omerta<\/em>, were indeed picked up by several internet users, websites, pages, and social media accounts. Between April 19-20, dozens of posts and videos promoting the ideas from these articles appeared.<\/p>\n\n

The pages<\/a> and accounts<\/a> on Facebook<\/a> were particularly active, many of which are anonymous<\/a> (here<\/a>, here<\/a> or here<\/a>), internet users<\/a> who frequently share<\/a> falsehoods and manipulations (like Vitalie Florea<\/a>, Andrei Ioni\u021b\u0103<\/a>, Sergiu Badan<\/a> or Alina Deliss<\/a>) or politicians<\/a> from the opposition<\/a> like Vlad Filat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Dozens of similar videos have appeared in a coordinated manner (especially published by anonymous accounts) on several social networks during the period of April 19-20.<\/p>\n\n

The spread of messages was contributed<\/a> by several well-known sources<\/a> of misinformation (Komsomolskaya Pravda in Moldova<\/em><\/a>, Primul \u00een Moldova<\/em><\/a>, eNews<\/em><\/a>, Canal5<\/a> or PRESS-Review<\/em><\/a>). The article published by Komsomolskaya Pravda in Moldova<\/em> was traditionally taken over by the website<\/a> and Facebook page<\/a> of the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM), claiming that “in the EU, they have finally started talking about the mafia that governs Moldova”.<\/p>\n\n

The main ideas from the articles Omerta<\/em> were spread<\/a> and commented on by several channels<\/a> on TikTok<\/a>, especially anonymous<\/a> ones. Similarly, numerous Telegram channels, known for constant misinformation, including WTF Moldova?!<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> Molva<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> Pandora’s Box<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> MEAT GRINDER NEWS<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> LAST HOUR<\/em><\/a> or GRT<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Most of these sources claimed that the Omerta<\/em> articles reflect the “reality” in R. Moldova, presenting it as a “playground” for the West, and the state – seized by the “mafia”. Many of the mentioned sources exaggerated some statements from the magazine’s articles, but also their importance. Thus, the PCRM generalized through “French media sources” (in the original: \u00ab\u0444\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0446\u0443\u0437\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0421\u041c\u0418\u00bb), while some accounts published statements like “France demolished the Sandu regime” (in the original: \u00ab\u0424\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0446\u0438\u044f \u0440\u0430\u0437\u043d\u0435\u0441\u043b\u0430 \u0440\u0435\u0436\u0438\u043c \u0421\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0443\u00bb).<\/p>\n\n

Unfounded claims and typical narratives of the Kremlin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The articles Omerta<\/em> do not present evidence and do not have factual coverage<\/strong> in support of the claims they launch.<\/p>\n\n

Many of these have been debunked<\/strong> over time by our portal (about the so-called interference of George Soros – here<\/a>; about the “destruction” of democracy in the Republic of Moldova – here<\/a> and here<\/a>; about the “closure of television channels” and “strict control of the press” – here<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a>, here<\/a> and here<\/a>); about “judicial harassment and intimidation of opponents” – here<\/a> and here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

The assertion about the external administration of R. Moldova is one of the main narratives specific to Russian propaganda.<\/p>\n\n

Although the series of articles Omerta<\/em> portrays Moldova as a place where the West and Russia are vying for influence, the materials focus on the alleged interference of the West (including in elections), omitting essential aspects about the demonstrated interference of Moscow in our country.<\/p>\n\n
