The German government has approved a bill intended to eliminate many of the restrictions imposed on its intelligence services in the post-war period. The measures come in a context where the country has been targeted by two attacks in a single month, revealing serious security gaps, reports The Guardian<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The amendments, which will also have to pass the parliamentary vote, largely respect a list of requests compiled by external and internal intelligence services, which have long complained that Germany lags behind its allies and adversaries.<\/p>\n\n

“We are transforming our information services into real secret services,” declared Alexander Dobrindt, the German Interior Minister, for the daily newspaper Bild, which described this change as a “revolution” in terms of security and a “historic” moment.<\/p>\n\n

“It is time for us to position ourselves in such a way as to be competitive and on an equal footing with partner services from around the world.
