They include rather uneasy narratives such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/belarus-faces-a-hybrid-war\">hybrid war<\/a>\u00a0facing the country; West planning to tear\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/the-west-needs-to-tear-away-from-russia-its-strategic-partner-and-ally-belarus\">Belarus away from Russia<\/a>; and the evil West engaging in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/washington-and-brussels-implement-information-war-against-people-of-russia-and-belarus\">information warfare<\/a>.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>In addition, the \u201chostilities and provocations from Ukraine\u201d are being countered by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/belarus-is-buying-russian-weapons-to-counter-provocations-and-hostilities-from-ukraine\">Belarussian regime by buying weapons<\/a>\u00a0<em>en masse<\/em>, despite the fact that Ukraine has no plans to destabilize its neighbor. In other words, the cases above claim that Belarus is under malign external threat.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"mwm-aal-item\" name=\"distort-facts\"><\/a><strong>Distort facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The AMITT framework lists ten different techniques to spread disinformation and manipulate the audiences, including creating fake research, leaking altered documents (examples published on EUvsDisinfo include a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/showing-support-for-a-made-up-migrant-camp-the-case-of-a-forged-letter\/\">fake letter<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/making-mountains-without-molehills\/\">fake ID<\/a>), and generating information pollution (as in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/conspiracy-mania-marks-one-year-anniversary-of-the-skripal-poisoning\">Skripal case<\/a>). Other examples of how to modify the world to suit pro-Kremlin facts also include denying involvement (still used\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/since-2014-kyiv-has-been-conducting-a-military-operation-against-the-residents-of-donbas\">regarding Ukraine<\/a>) and demanding proof (case of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/belgium-just-like-malaysia-believes-the-mh17-trial-is-politically-biased-against-russia\">MH17<\/a>\u00a0flight tragedy).<\/p>\n<p>Disinformation is often knitted around a kernel of truth. This week we found two examples where content from a respected source was adjusted to fit the pro-Kremlin worldview. First, French Sputnik\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/ft-thanks-to-sanctions-russian-agriculture-strengthens-its-position-in-the-world\">misrepresented an article from the Financial Times<\/a>\u00a0by falsely claiming that EU and US sanctions had boosted the Russian economy. The same Sputnik also distorted an investigation by CNN to support the theory that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/cnn-confirms-the-fsbs-accusations-against-the-cia\">CIA destabilized relations<\/a>\u00a0between Minsk and Moscow. In reality, the CIA didn\u2019t play a leading role in the operation in question.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"mwm-aal-item\" name=\"channels\"><\/a><strong>Channels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AMITT also lists many social media outlets that can be used to promote and disseminate distorted messages. One way to see how the Kremlin-controlled media uses these possibilities and also to measure the effectiveness of their work is to check how many likes, shares, and comments on social media an article received.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at examples of disinforming content mentioned in this text, the only successful articles on social media were created by French Sputnik receiving 791 engagements for the FT article and 70 engagements for the article referring to the CNN investigation.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"mwm-aal-item\" name=\"amplification\"><\/a><strong>Amplification<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to social media, the framework also lists tertiary websites as handy to further convey the message. A good example is a false claim about the West allocating\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/the-west-funded-the-ukrainian-coup-with-5-billion\">$5 billion to support the coup<\/a>\u00a0in Ukraine that was made accessible on six Arabic sites that referred back to Sputnik Arabic.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/disinformation-cases\/?text=&amp;date=&amp;disinfo_language%5B%5D=Arabic&amp;per_page=\">Disinformation Cases Database<\/a> has many Arabic cases where more than ten outlets spread the same message often originating from RT or Sputnik.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"mwm-aal-item\" name=\"play-the-long-game\"><\/a><strong>Play the long game<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The AMITT framework concludes with techniques describing the persistence of disinforming activities. When looking at our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/disinformation-cases\/\">Disinformation Cases Database<\/a> and projecting the activities of the Kremlin into the future, it\u2019s clear that disinformation is not evanescent and it won\u2019t disappear like the morning fog.
