{"id":23459,"date":"2022-06-27T13:59:11","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T10:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/disinfo.md\/?p=23459"},"modified":"2025-02-06T16:10:05","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T14:10:05","slug":"geopolitical-alternative-stake-of-opposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/disinfo.md\/en\/geopolitical-alternative-stake-of-opposition\/","title":{"rendered":"Geopolitical alternative, stake of opposition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Op-Ed by Victor Pelin<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Opposition\u2019s reactions to obtaining of EU candidate status by the Republic of Moldova<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Communist-Socialist opposition had to react to the confirmation by the European Council of the European perspective of the Republic of Moldova and offering of the EU\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mai.gov.md\/ro\/news\/republica-moldova-obtinut-statutul-de-stat-candidat-la-uniunea-europeana-mesajul-ministrului\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">candidate status<\/a>\u00a0to it. The event saddened the Communist-Socialists so much that these revealed their own perspectives for the future of the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n<p>In the mentioned context, the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) issued a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/socialistii.md\/psrm-isi-exprima-ingrijorarea-in-legatura-cu-isteria-generala-alimentata-de-guvernare-si-intretinuta-de-structurile-de-propaganda-proguvernamentale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>\u00a0in which it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>expressed its\u00a0<b>regret<\/b><\/i><i>\u00a0because the Republic of Moldova became hostage of contextual and geopolitical decisions that were adopted without consulting all the citizens;<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b>condemned\u00a0<\/b><i>the general euphoria fueled by the leaders of the current government, who treat this event as historic, as a big accomplishment of the government and as a great merit of the citizens;<\/i><\/li>\n<li><b>called for\u00a0<i>vigilance\u00a0<\/i><\/b><i>over this accession decision created in the propaganda labs of the current government<\/i>;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<b>ascertained\u00a0<\/b>that the citizens, on June<b>\u00a0<\/b>23, 2022,\u00a0<i>became hostage to long-term geopolitical games<\/i>\u00a0in which they were\u00a0 involved\u00a0<i>without being asked in a referendum<\/i>\u00a0etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In conclusion, PSRM\u00a0<b>warned\u00a0<\/b>that only the\u00a0<i>wish expressed by the people would have had legitimacy for the future generations,\u00a0<\/i>not yet a political and symbolical decision,\u00a0<i>for an electoral cycle of four years.\u00a0<\/i>So, the citizens should be grateful to PSRM for the sincerity with which it warned them that if they come to power, they could renounce the EU candidate status of the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n<p>The Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM), the PSRM\u2019s ally in the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS), was much more trenchant in its negative reaction to the obtaining of the EU candidate status,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcrm.md\/main\/index_md.php?action=news&amp;id=18774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noting<\/a>\u00a0that this status\u00a0<i>offers to Moldova absolutely no preference and perspective of accession to the European Union. \u00a0<\/i>Moreover, according to the leader of PCRM, Vladimir Voronin, the EU candidate status granted to the Republic of Moldova deprives the country of\u00a0<b><i>geopolitical freedom<\/i><\/b>, making the possibility of cooperation with the\u00a0<b>strategic partner<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 the Russian Federation \u2013 impossible. So, both PSRM and PCRM deplored the\u00a0<i>historic event<\/i>\u00a0of June 23, 2022, avoiding trenchantly mentioning that this is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipn.md\/en\/wormhole-and-end-of-moldovan-geopolitics-op-ed-by-victor-pelin-7978_1090532.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">result of the war<\/a>\u00a0waged by the\u00a0<i>strategic partner<\/i>\u00a0&#8211; Russia &#8211; against the people of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><b>Attempt to create Euroskeptical political pole<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Not only the Communist-Socialist allies expressed their negative attitude to the obtaining by the Republic of Moldova of the EU candidate status. One of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsmaker.md\/ro\/stoianoglo-procurorii-pregatesc-o-noua-invinuire-pentru-ilan-sor-in-dosarul-furtul-miliardului\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">main beneficiaries<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingnews.md\/procuratura-din-germania-a-stabilit-ca-ilan-sor-este-unul-dintre-beneficiarii-furtului-miliardului\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executors of the billion theft<\/a>\u00a0Ilan \u0218or, who leads a party that bears his name, also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stiri.md\/article\/politica\/sor-despre-statutul-de-candidat-ambalaj-frumos-dar-cu-nimic-in-interior\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said that<\/a>: \u201c<i>Neither the West nor the East needs us<\/i>\u00a0(Republic of Moldova)<i>. We are a bargaining cheap in the games of great powers<\/i>\u201d. This way, there was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pdm.md\/ro\/interviuri\/vlad-plahotniuc-tara-are-nevoie-de-a-patra-cale-de-dezvoltare-calea-pentru-moldova\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reanimated the main thesis<\/a>\u00a0concerning the fourth development path the Republic of Moldova, launched by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pages.md\/ro\/procurorul-general-plahotniuc-principalul-beneficiar-al-furtului-miliardului\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">main beneficiary of the billion theft<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Vlad Plahotniuc. This preference for the\u00a0<i>geopolitical neutrality\u00a0<\/i>is somehow understood<i>.\u00a0<\/i>The integration into the EU can prevent billion thieves from continuing their prodigious activity. Probably, namely for these reasons, Ilan \u0218or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stiri.md\/article\/politica\/sor-despre-statutul-de-candidat-ambalaj-frumos-dar-cu-nimic-in-interior\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called on the citizens and all the political power<\/a>s: \u201c<i>let\u2019s unite, sit at the negotiating table,\u00a0<b>forget all the misunderstandings and angers and remove this incompetent government<\/b><\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ilan \u0218or\u2019s call powerfully resonates with the call of the leader of PSRM, Igor Dodon, who in the mentioned context\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurnal.md\/ro\/news\/a887efafe85be9d2\/dodon-in-timp-ce-rm-i-se-acorda-statutul-de-tara-candidat-pentru-aderare-la-ue-aceasta-putere-poate-fi-data-jos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>\u00a0almost the same thing: \u201c<i>The opposition has nothing to share<em>. The current situation in Moldova under Maia Sandu is the worst ever and will never be witnessed again. We should leave aside personal grudges, some of the ideological divergences.\u00a0<b>This government can be removed if we are all united<\/b>\u201d. We should not be surprised at the fact that the statements of Ilan \u0218or and Igor Dodon give the sensation of deja vu. It was noted not only once that on December 6, 2021, \u0218or Party\u00a0<\/em><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/partidulsor.md\/news\/partidul-sor-propune-crearea-unui-front-al-salvarii-na%c8%9bionale,-pentru-a-scapa-%c8%9bara-de-dictatura.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced the creation<\/a><em>\u00a0of the National Salvation Front (FSN) and PSRM tried to attribute this initiative to itself when Igor Dodon on December 18, 2022 launched the call to found a Common National Front (FUN). The problem is no one wanted to join either FSN or FUN. That\u2019s why the obtaining of the EU candidate status makes the two leaders desperately reiterate their calls.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For the sake of truth, we should admit that the call made by \u0218or Party and PSRM had a great resounding effect. It goes to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zugo.md\/actualitate\/ultima-ora-ion-ceban-anunta-ca-paraseste-psrm-edilul-de-chisinau-isi-creeaza-propriul-partid\/179927\/actualitate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launch<\/a>, on December 30, 2021, of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zugo.md\/actualitate\/ultima-ora-ion-ceban-anunta-ca-paraseste-psrm-edilul-de-chisinau-isi-creeaza-propriul-partid\/179927\/actualitate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initiative<\/a>\u00a0of the mayor general of the municipality of Chisinau Ion Ceban, concerning the creation of the National Alternative Movement (MAN). Ion Ceban\u2019s initiative appeared in only several weeks of the launch of the initiatives of \u0218or Party and PSRM and we can intuit that it was actually a fast\u00a0<b>alternative<\/b>\u00a0reaction to those concerning the creation of FSN and FUN:\u00a0<em>\u201cI know that everyone expects an alternative that would unite everyone, would build a future, would take care of the people, first of all, and of their interests \u2013 an alternative of deeds not of empty words and forgotten promises, of cheap shows. I care about what is going on. I today launch the National Alternative Movement on my own initiative and the team stands by me\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So, we convince ourselves that the opposition politicians prefer to create\u00a0<b>alternative movements\u00a0<\/b>than to discredit themselves<b>\u00a0<\/b>by supporting the calls of Ilan \u0218or or Igor Dodon. This conclusion is reached when we see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tv8.md\/ru\/2022\/24\/06\/socialistul-ceban-felicita-rm-pentru-statutul-de-candidat-la-ue-nu-vor-mai-exista-scuze-pentru-intarzierea-reformelor\/203691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reaction of the capital city\u2019s mayor<\/a>\u00a0to the obtaining of the EU candidate status by the Republic of Moldova: \u201c<b><i>I congratulate the Republic of Moldova, the citizens, the authorities on the obtaining of the EU candidate status<\/i><\/b><i>. It\u2019s definite that from now on, there will be no excuses for the delay in reforms or for the delay in their implementation \u2013 structural reforms that the<\/i>\u00a0<i>Republic of Moldova needs<\/i>&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This way, the creation in the Republic of Moldova of a Euroskeptical political pole is problematic as the Communist-Socialist leaders are not and cannot be credible. Firstly, in time Igor Dodon and Vladimir Voronin behaved on the political arena as weathervanes that change their attitude depending on conjuncture. For example, the leader of PCRM, when he was President of the Republic of Moldova, pleaded for the recognition by the EU of a clear European perspective for the Republic of Moldova. This thing was discussed in the meeting of the National Commission for European Integration that Voronin himself constituted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.md\/cautare\/getResults?doc_id=41768&amp;lang=ro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by presidential decree<\/a>. As President, Vladimir Voronin on June 25, 2008 insisted on the debating of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ape.md\/2008\/06\/integrarea-europeana-a-republicii-moldova-obiective-ambiaioase-ayi-realita-ai-victor-chirila-panorama-ape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European integration issue<\/a>\u00a0this way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>offering to the Republic of Moldova of the possibility of signing a Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the EU;<\/li>\n<li>gradual liberalization of the visa regime for the Moldovan citizens who travel in the Schengen Area of the EU;<\/li>\n<li>recognition of the Republic of Moldova\u2019s\u00a0<b>perspective of obtaining the EU membership, without setting a concrete date<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This way, we see that the mayor of the capital city Ion Ceban, who was a member of PCRM and also of PSRM, had to distance himself from his former mates \u2013 political weathervanes and to show minimum decency, behaving consistently at least with regard to the European perspective of the Republic of Moldova even if he is in irreconcilable opposition to the current government.<\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Now that our country ultimately obtained what PCRM and its leader Vladimir Voronin wanted \u2013\u00a0<i>the perspective of the EU membership without a fixed date\u00a0<\/i>\u2013 we see that the ex-President is preoccupied with something else \u2013\u00a0<i>geopolitical alternative\u00a0<\/i>for our country\u00a0<i>and cooperation with Russia,\u00a0<\/i>which militarily attacked Ukraine. The same refers to the current leaders of PSRM \u2013 Igor Dodon and Zinaida Grechanyi &#8211; who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.md\/cautare\/getResults?doc_id=18214&amp;lang=ro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formed part of the composition<\/a>\u00a0of the same National Commission for European Integration within which they agreed to ask the EU to grant a clear European perspective to the Republic of Moldova. A confirmation of this was the fact that after the parliamentary elections of April 5, 2009, the current leaders of PSRM designed the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.e-democracy.md\/files\/parties\/program-activitate-guvern-moldova-2009-ro.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government program of the Republic of Moldova for 2009-2013<\/a>\u00a0in which it was said (see page 5) that:\u00a0<b><i>The country\u2019s integration into the European Union is the incontestable desideratum of most of our compatriots, this representing the irreversible and normal priority of the domestic and foreign \u00a0policy of the Government of the Republic of Moldova<\/i><\/b><i>. The Government\u2019s major objective is to continue\u00a0<b>transposing the principles of the community acquis\u00a0<\/b>that are<b>\u00a0<\/b>defined in multiple normative documents of our state<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that when the legislative body voted the mentioned program, Vladimir Voronin was Speaker of Parliament, while Igor Dodon and Zinaida Grechanyi, besides holding the posts of Prime Minister and, respectively, Deputy Prime Minister, served also as MPs. So, all the current leaders of PCRM and PSRM voted for the\u00a0<b><i>irreversible priority of most of the citizens \u2013 the European integration,\u00a0<\/i><\/b>without insisting on the organization of a referendum on the given issue. In fact, the objections about the holding of a referendum are pure speculations. No country held a referendum on the obtaining of the EU candidate status and only a part of the countries that joined the EU staged referendums only after the accession negotiations were completed, right before the accession itself.<\/p>\n<p>However, we cannot exclude the constitution of a\u00a0<b>Euroskeptical political pole\u00a0<\/b>with the involvement of the party of Ilan \u0218or and his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipn.md\/en\/revolt-of-ilan-sors-company-op-ed-by-victor-pelin-7978_1086291.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wedding party guests<\/a>\u00a0Vladimir Voronin and Igor Dodon. But this structure cannot represent an alternative to the European integration and will rather represent a gathering of\u00a0<b>political weathervanes<\/b>\u00a0that lack any consistency and of\u00a0<b>persons accused of the billion theft<\/b>. Will there be many willing to join in?
