For example, when you read about the pandemic, you cannot avoid extravagant narratives of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/satan-in-the-service-of-disinformation\/?highlight=satan\">Satan<\/a>\u00a0pulling the strings, or wild scenarios in which Western leaders emerge as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/italy-and-other-states-have-deliberately-used-the-covid-19-pandemic-to-establish-sanitary-dictatorships-and-subjugate-the-population-by-spreading-fear-and-terror\/\">dictators<\/a>. Probably, part of the explanation is that, from the viewpoint of the receiver, the drama is seductive; people click on hyperbolic and emotional content.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/joc\/article\/70\/5\/623\/5912109\">Oxford University study<\/a>\u00a0also sheds light on those that spread disinformation. It found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/whats-wrong-with-rt\/\">RT TV channel<\/a>, a super spreader, uses disinformation to create (political) chaos. If\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/throwing-coronavirus-disinfo-at-the-wall-to-see-what-sticks\/\">chaos<\/a>\u00a0is the goal, the means is a massive number of disinformation narratives, like an incoming tsunami. In the search of clicks, unrestricted extravagancy is required. Looking at the disinformation trends this week, we see plenty of bizarre tsunamis.<\/p>\n<p>As could be expected, we spotted a lot of disinformation targeting Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, the protests ignited by his arrest, and the Moscow visit of the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell. As we already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/deflection-instead-of-dialogue\/\">reported<\/a>, a stream of interconnected disinformation narratives already sprang up during Borrell\u2019s joint\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/deflection-instead-of-dialogue\/\">press conference<\/a>\u00a0with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, produced by the pro-Kremlin disinformation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/disinformation-cases\/\">ecosystem<\/a>\u00a0and flowing seamlessly after the conference had ended.<\/p>\n<p>During the EU High Representative\u2019s visit, Russia also expelled three European diplomats who were monitoring the protests. Actually, they were only\u00a0<em>present\u00a0<\/em>at the spot, which is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eeas.europa.eu\/headquarters\/headquarters-homepage\/92678\/russia-statement-high-representativevice-president-josep-borrell-expulsion-european-diplomats_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compatible<\/a>\u00a0with their status as foreign diplomats. Even the videos shared by Russian state media showed the diplomats were merely outdoors at the time of the demonstrations. Besides, even under Russian constitutional law, those protests were legal. However, pro-Kremlin outlets claimed that Russia was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/russia-was-forced-to-expel-eu-diplomats-who-participated-in-illegal-protests\/\">forced<\/a>\u201d to expel EU diplomats who participated in illegal protests or that diplomats from the EU took\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/diplomats-from-eu-took-part-in-un-sanctioned-rallies-russias-patience-has-limits\/\">part in<\/a>\u00a0unsanctioned rallies.<\/p>\n<p>A number of narratives framed the EU\u2019s behavior as aggressive towards Russia, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/storytelling-the-disinformation-part-6\/?highlight=hero\">hero<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/no-we-are-the-victim\/\">victim<\/a>\u00a0of a great many false stories. One narrative claimed that Borrell\u2019s mission was to publicly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/borrells-mission-was-to-publicly-flog-russia\/\">flog<\/a>\u00a0Russia. Another one referred to the EU\u2019s alleged dream of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/western-powers-cultivate-futile-dreams-of-invading-russia\/\">invading<\/a>\u00a0Russia.
