Let\u2019s embark on a journey through 2019, where we experience all the typical symptoms of a roller coaster ride, from pure amusement to a sense of insecurity. Hop on!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNothing New in the East\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As EU vs Disinfo wrote in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/there-have-never-been-any-russian-forces-in-ukraine\/\">January 2019<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Ukraine was constantly in the crosshairs of Kremlin disinformation last year and it seems that the country will remain there this year as well.<\/em>\u00a0Apparently, the EU disinformation watchdog was right \u2013 Ukraine remained the most frequent target of the pro-Kremlin disinformation campaigns. There were hardly any surprises when it came to narratives used. Attempts at white-washing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/there-have-never-been-any-russian-forces-in-ukraine\/\">Russia\u2019s troops and armaments involvement<\/a>\u00a0in eastern Ukraine, portraying the illegal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/disinformation-cases\/?text=&amp;date=&amp;disinfo_keywords%5B%5D=77148\">annexation of Crimea<\/a>\u00a0as a democratic referendum, blaming the West for instigating the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/disinformation-cases\/?text=&amp;date=&amp;disinfo_keywords%5B%5D=77122&amp;disinfo_keywords%5B%5D=96244\">Euromaidan<\/a>\u00a0protests, and aggressively pushing the narrative about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/disinformation-cases\/?text=&amp;date=&amp;disinfo_countries%5B%5D=77547&amp;disinfo_keywords%5B%5D=77101\">fascists<\/a>\u00a0running basically everything in Ukraine were all there this year \u2013 and EU vs Disinfo experts debunked them yet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/ukraine-attacked-again-and-again-repetitive-kremlin-disinformation-again\/\">again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, not much has changed in the disinformation campaign centered on the shooting down of Flight\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/tracing-five-years-of-pro-kremlin-disinformation-about-mh17\/\">MH17,<\/a>\u00a0which took place in June 2014.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EUvsDisinfo\/status\/1151400021025263617\">Five years of lies<\/a>\u00a0later, pro-Kremlin outlets still repeat the same messages about lack of proof of Russia\u2019s involvement and try to pin the blame on Ukraine, in spite of the robust body of evidence from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.government.nl\/topics\/mh17-incident\/achieving-justice\/the-criminal-investigation\">international investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even a roller coaster needs to change to a slower pace sometimes, before it gets to another hill. And as 2018 saw pro-Kremlin outlets struggling up the slope of disinformation targeting Sergei Skripal a, his and his daughter Yulia\u2019s poisoning and the investigation, which clearly proved Russia\u2019s responsibility, they seemed to have reached the peak of their manipulation abilities, as EU vs Disinfo counted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/conspiracy-mania-marks-one-year-anniversary-of-the-skripal-poisoning\/\">over 150 false narratives<\/a>\u00a0about the case of Sergei Skripal a year after the poisoning. And then down the slope they went, repeatedly accusing the UK and Western countries, who voiced their support for the results of the British investigation, of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/buzzfeed-hires-russophobic-journalists-spreads-false-information-and-incites-hatred\/\">Russophobia<\/a>. That\u2019s the most common accusation used by pro-Kremlin actors when confronted with evidence, be it the Skripal case, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/anti-russian-hysteria-has-born-such-daemons-as-fascism-in-the-baltic-states-and-banderism-in-ukraine\/\">foreign\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/federation-council-laughs-at-swedish-submarine-hunts\/\">military policy<\/a>\u00a0of different countries, the activities of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/russia-has-not-to-any-extent-exerted-any-form-of-aggresson-it-is-the-eu-which-is-agressive\/\">the EU<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/aggression-towards-russia-derives-from-american-culture\/\">NATO<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/disinformation-cases\/?text=&amp;date=&amp;disinfo_keywords%5B0%5D=77113&amp;offset=20\">more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Russophobia \u201dargument\u201d was put to use this year in the context of important historical anniversaries. Hold tight, as we\u2019re taking a sharp turn into 1939, where, according to pro-Kremlin outlets, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/the-molotov-ribbentrop-pact-is-not-an-unusual-document-as-other-european-countries-signed-the-non-aggression-agreements-with-germany\/\">Molotov-Ribbentrop pact<\/a>\u00a0and its secret protocol was just about non-aggression and not about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/eu-parliament-falsifies-history-by-declaring-the-molotov-ribbentrop-pact-to-be-the-cause-of-the-wwii\/\">dividing<\/a>\u00a0Europe into Nazi German and Soviet Russian spheres of influence; where Baltic States\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/the-soviet-union-liberated-riga-from-fascists\/\">joined (sic!) the USSR<\/a>\u00a0in accordance with international law (and Lithuania even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/lithuania-was-a-direct-beneficiary-of-the-molotov-ribbentrop-pact\/\">benefitted<\/a>\u00a0from the pact!); and while Poland\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EUvsDisinfo\/status\/1170222667670196225\">started<\/a>\u00a0World War II.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Going Upside Down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Watch out now, your sense of balance may get heavily disrupted as we enter the land of the puppets.<\/p>\n<p>The very interesting case in point is the EU, which has been a constant target of Russian disinformation. This year, the emphasis was put on the elections to the European Parliament. Pro-Kremlin outlets managed to portray the EU both as the tormentor and the victim. On the one hand, narratives about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/european-union-has-nazi-roots\/\">EU\u2019s Nazi roots<\/a>\u00a0and the EU\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/a-big-number-of-european-countries-are-under-a-new-form-of-colonialism\/\">colonizing<\/a>\u00a0and\/or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/the-european-parliament-is-a-facade-structure-to-corrupt-national-elites\/\">corrupting<\/a>\u00a0its member states were thrown into the information space. The message was clear: the EU is evil and its citizens should steer clear from having anything to do with it. On the other hand, the same EU was portrayed as weak and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/european-parliament-does-not-have-real-powers-eu-bureaucrats-decide\/\">without any power or influence<\/a>\u00a0whatsoever, and the elections \u2013 as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/groundless-accusation-of-ties-to-russia-became-classic-trap-aimed-to-discredit-eu-conservative-candidates\/\">scam<\/a>. Contradictory as they are, all these narratives had the same purpose: to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/eu-elections-are-a-sham\/\">discourage<\/a>\u00a0Europeans from voting. Luckily for European democracy, however, these attempts proved wildly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/democracy-as-an-act-of-defiance\/\">unsuccessful<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not leaving the puppet land yet, the roller coaster takes us next to other narratives used under this thematic umbrella. The climate crisis made it to the headlines this year too, with stories both well-known \u2013 such as the ones questioning the human factor behind it or even its very\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/the-west-invented-the-climate-hoax-to-stop-russias-economic-development\/\">existence<\/a>! \u2013 and new ones, mostly focused on Greta Thunberg. The climate activist was subject to a crass disinformation campaign, trying to show her as the victim of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/climate-activists-want-to-destroy-progress-in-the-name-of-green-faith\/\">\u201dgreen faith<\/a>\u201d on the one hand and as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euvsdisinfo.eu\/report\/greta-thunberg-has-declared-war-on-white-men\/\">a threat to the world<\/a>\u00a0on the other.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the first inventions that paved the way for modern roller coasters had the form of hills of ice and are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roller_coaster\">believed to originate<\/a>\u00a0from Russia. Coincidence? Definitely.
