The head of the Berlin government said on Monday that the threat to Germany’s internal security “is not abstract, but very concrete”.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared on Monday that the victory of the pro-Russian AfD party in the elections in Saxony-Anhalt will not change the federal government’s support for Ukraine and warned that there is a very concrete threat to the internal security of Germany.
“And I want to be very clear: 2,500 kilometers east of here, people are particularly delighted with this election result,” said Merz, referring to Russia.
“It is not surprising at all, considering who tried to encourage and determine this outcome. In this regard, we know exactly who we are dealing with here,” insisted Merz, the leader of the conservative CDU party, quoted by Reuters.
AfD, which garnered over 43% of the votes in the Saxony-Anhalt elections on Sunday, more than double the CDU’s score, advocates for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Moscow, the resumption of relations with Russia and energy imports from there, as well as the cessation of military support granted to Kiev.
