On Tuesday, February 14, Russia warned at the Disarmament Conference in Geneva that a possible resumption of nuclear testing by the United States could trigger a dangerous “domino effect” in the field of nuclear weapons. The statement comes in the context of accusations made by Washington, alleging that China and Russia have secretly conducted low-yield nuclear tests, reports The Economic Times, citing AFP.
Russian Ambassador Ghenadi Gatilov criticized the announcement made by U.S. President Donald Trump at the end of 2025, regarding the U.S. intention to resume nuclear testing for the first time since 1992. He warned that abandoning the American moratorium could destabilize the global balance.
“The United States’ withdrawal from their national moratorium will trigger a domino effect,” Gatilov declared, emphasizing that “the responsibility for the consequences will fall entirely on Washington.”
U.S. Accusations: Secret Tests in China and Russia
The Russian ambassador’s statements come after Christopher Yeaw, deputy of the U.S. Secretary of State responsible for arms control, reaffirmed that President Donald Trump was “serious” when he announced the resumption of nuclear testing. Christopher Yeaw argued that the U.S. must respond “on an equal footing” to what it considers to be secret tests conducted by China and Russia, according to TRT World.
The American official presented details about an alleged underground Chinese nuclear test, of approximately ten tons, which supposedly took place in 2020, and accused Beijing of preparing higher yield tests. Washington also claims that Russia is conducting similar tests, all in secret.
