The United States is considering delaying or even rejecting the nomination proposed by President Emmanuel Macron for the future French ambassador to Washington, following public criticisms made by Paris regarding the human rights situation in the United States, according to four sources, cited by Reuters.
Although sources have stated that no decision has been made yet, two of them have claimed that France’s criticisms – conveyed through a social media post by the French mission to the United Nations in Geneva – have caused real dissatisfaction among high-ranking officials in President Donald Trump’s administration. Two other sources have stated that officials are trying to defuse relations with France.
“The United States is very disappointed by the irresponsible and disrespectful rhetoric of the French,” declared an official from the State Department. “We respond appropriately to their comments.“
A US decision to delay or reject the candidate proposed by Macron would be extremely unusual and could deepen the rift between allies, who have recently clashed over tariffs and the war in Iran.
Macron has submitted the necessary documents for Aurélien Lechevallier, former advisor at the Élysée Palace and current chief of staff to the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, to become the next ambassador of France to Washington. France hopes that he will be installed in his position by September, one of the sources stated.
