The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has signed a decree on the withdrawal of citizenship for nine individuals who hold or have held positions in the separatist Transnistrian region, as well as those who fought on the side of the separatists in the 1992 war.

The decree targets nine men, among whom one was born in Russia, and the other eight in the Republic of Moldova.

“People who have held and continue to hold various positions within the so-called unconstitutional entities on the left bank of the Dniester. At the same time, two of those targeted fought on the side of the separatists in the Dniester war in 1992,” emphasized the officials of the Presidential Administration.

The withdrawal of citizenship was initiated by the Public Services Agency (ASP), the process being started after the Information and Security Service (SIS) notified the institution about particularly serious offenses committed by the nine individuals who harmed the interests of the Republic of Moldova.

“The withdrawal of the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova is a form of sanction for holding positions within the unconstitutional structures on the left bank of the Dniester, for continuous actions undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state, as well as for serious violations of the rights of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. These acts were committed in the interest of a foreign state that violates our country’s neutrality and wages a war of aggression against the neighboring state Ukraine. The withdrawal of citizenship is a measure provided by law, applied in cases where the fundamental interests of the Republic of Moldova are affected,” detailed Stanislav Secrieru, presidential adviser in the field of national security.

In the meantime, the Presidency in Chisinau emphasizes that “respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the state are fundamental principles that cannot be violated. The authorities will continue to act firmly, in strict accordance with the law, to protect the constitutional order and the national interest.”
