Jeffrey Sachs and Yanis Varoufakis, two giants among economists, addressed in a podcast produced by Rational Thinker the issue of the sharp economic decline of the European Union. Left without an industry after outsourcing most of it to produce cheaply in countries like India, China, or Vietnam, Europe is now vulnerable and susceptible to blackmail. This was seen during the pandemic, when the European Union faced a shortage of masks, disinfectants, and medicines, as factories in China were forced to produce exclusively for the domestic market for a while.
Also, the enormous prices of natural gas, oil and electricity in the European Union, caused in part by the overtaxing of energy producers, have undermined economic competitiveness. And the illusion of a painful Green Deal for the population and companies has become evident as the European auto industry, particularly the German one, has become a shadow of what it was before.
EU, a hunchbacked dwarf compared to the USA
It’s no coincidence that official figures show the European Union accounts for 17% of global GDP and is in continuous decline. For comparison, the USA represents 26% of global GDP and is still growing. This is despite the European Union having a population of over 450 million inhabitants, while the USA has under 350 million.
