(COMBO) This combination of pictures created on August 18, 2025 shows US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, DC, on August 18, 2025 and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025. US President Donald Trump said August 18 he had started arranging a two-way peace meeting between Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia's Vladimir Putin -- to be followed by three-way talks involving himself. "At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelensky," Trump said after hosting Zelensky and European leaders at the White House. "After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself." European leaders join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in talks with US President Donald Trump on August 18, as they try to find a way to end Russia's offensive. The leaders heading to Washington on Monday to appear alongside Zelensky call themselves the "coalition of the willing." The American President Donald Trump has sparked new controversies after stating that Russia has behaved “quite well” regarding Ukraine and that it has not done too much in the conflict. The White House leader also criticized the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and suggested that he should appoint another person for the negotiations to end the war.

Trump’s statements were made in the context of discussions about the prospects of a peace agreement and about the role of the United States in efforts to stop the conflict triggered by the large-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.

The position expressed by the American president contrasts with the magnitude of the Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory and the destruction caused by the war. His statements bring back to attention the uncertainties related to how the Washington administration intends to exert pressure on Moscow and Kiev to reach an agreement.

Trump asks Zelenski to change the negotiator

Trump declared on Monday, October 19, that the Ukrainian president should consider appointing another person to negotiate on behalf of Kiev.

“Perhaps it’s time for Zelensky to let someone else negotiate,” stated the American leader.

Trump argued that the war could have ended earlier if Zelensky had followed his recommendations and criticized the Ukrainian leader’s approach in efforts to stop the conflict.

The American president stated that he wishes for the war to end and for the loss of human lives to cease. However, his statements do not provide details about the specific conditions that Russia and Ukraine would need to accept in order to reach an agreement.

What did Trump say about Russia

Asked about Moscow’s behavior in the war in Ukraine, the American president stated that Russia has behaved “quite well” in terms of the conflict and added that it “has not done much”.

The statement comes in the context where Russia continues the war initiated in February 2022 and carries out attacks on Ukrainian territory. Trump’s declaration represents his assessment of Moscow’s actions, not an independent finding regarding the scale of Russian military operations.

At the same time, Trump stated that the United States continues to share intelligence information with Ukraine. He also said that his administration might consider extending the stay of Ukrainians in the US under the Temporary Protection Status (TPS), until the end of the war.
