The European Union allocated, on Monday, 120 million euros for the strengthening of the air defense system of the Republic of Moldova. The amount is allocated under the European Instrument for Peace.

The Council of the European Union announced on Monday the allocation of aid worth 120 million euros to strengthen the air defense system of the Republic of Moldova, under the European Peace Facility (EPF).

Specifically, the measure will finance a medium-range air defense system for the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova. This complements previous assistance measures within the European Peace Facility, aimed at supporting air surveillance and air defense, writes Mediafax.

“This support will continue to allow the Armed Forces of Moldova to improve their operational effectiveness and, therefore, to ensure better protection of civilians. Through this new action, the total support granted by the EU to Moldova reaches 317 million euros within the European Peace Facility,” according to the statement issued by the EU Council.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau welcomes the decision regarding the allocation of financial aid.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova welcomed the support allocated by the EU Council.

“The aforementioned assistance is expected to significantly contribute in the medium term to the modernization of the National Army’s anti-aircraft defense capabilities. This will contribute to the security of Moldovan airspace and, consequently, to the safety of our country’s citizens,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau conveyed in a press release.

“Among the practical uses of the equipment supplied through the EPF are the defusing of shells left over from the Second World War, as well as providing potable water to localities affected by the pollution of the Nistru River and mitigating the consequences of floods in the Republic of Moldova in the spring of 2026”, the ministry further mentions.
