Bulgaria has strengthened security at Bezmer Air Base, following information suggesting that Iranian forces may have assessed potential military targets in Southeast Europe, including American objectives in Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian Minister of Interior, Ivan Demerdzhiev, announced on Wednesday, August 19, that the authorities have taken “all possible measures” at the airbase, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense.
He stated that the level of security measures is even higher than what would have been justified by the information currently available.
“We are constantly monitoring the situation and developments, and we will continue to take much broader and more intense precautionary measures than the threat level indicated by the information available at this moment,” said the Bulgarian minister, quoted by trtworld.
The measures taken by the Bulgarian authorities come after information about Iran’s intention to strike military targets in Europe if the US President, Donald Trump, escalates military actions against Tehran, writes Financial Times, citing sources within the regime.
According to published data, Iranian forces have assessed possible strikes on American assets in southeastern Europe, with Bulgaria (which recently approved the use of the Bezmer air base by US refueling aircraft) and Cyprus, where there is a British air base, being mentioned. Moreover, in Cyprus a British air base was attacked by a drone in March.
