Two representatives of the opposition in Serbia have recently been targeted by powerful cyber espionage tools, according to one of them and a report published Monday by Citizen Lab, a Canadian organization that monitors computer activities, reports Reuters, as relayed by Agerpres.
This incident is the latest in a series of cases where, according to researchers, surveillance technology has been used against students, opposition politicians, and other individuals in Serbia, a country where, on Sunday, parliamentary elections will take place.
Citizen Lab announced on Monday that, following an investigation conducted in collaboration with Share Foundation, a digital rights organization, it was determined that the iPhone of Serbian academic Vladan Djokic was attacked and breached with the help of the Pegasus spyware, created by the Israeli group NSO.
At the same time, former prosecutor Rade Bajic told Reuters that, on August 13, he received a warning from Apple informing him that his phone had been targeted by a “mercenary software”. However, both he and the Citizen Lab organization stated that they could not definitively determine whether the device had been compromised or how this could have occurred.
