Russia’s Novaya Gazeta is closing on November 9. The newspaper, known for its investigations into corruption and human rights abuses, will cease operations on November 9.
The journalists issued a statement titled “They Have Killed Us.” They claim that the decision was forced by the intelligence services and the authorities in Moscow.
According to them, the system they used to receive donations from readers has been blocked, and staff have been notified that they must vacate the premises where they have worked for 30 years. The newspaper’s final issue has yet to be published.
Before the publication shut down, the Kremlin blocked its websites, and Russia’s Ministry of Justice added every member of its editorial staff to the register of “foreign agents.” The editor-in-chief’s home was also recently searched.
Novaya Gazeta was founded in 1993. Its journalists investigated corruption, abuses by law enforcement, electoral fraud, and crimes within the military.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, some members of the team left Russia and founded a separate publication, Novaya Gazeta Europe.
