An explosion caused by a bomb in a military town in the Far East of Russia has killed a Russian army officer, but the blast apparently missed its target, writes The Guardian.

Sources close to the incident report that the bomb exploded on Tuesday, around 9:00 local time, in a residential building in Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1, where Major General Azatbek Omurbek resides.

Known as the “Butcher of Bucha”, he commanded the Russian troops during the occupation of the Ukrainian city, in the first part of the Russian invasion.

Two sources specified that the bomb was placed in a mailbox, between the first and second floor of the building, and the bomber installed a video camera in the perimeter to monitor the residents’ transit.

Ultimately, the attacker targeted the wrong entrance: the explosion killed a subordinate of Omurbekov, while the general was not injured.

The Guardian reminds that the EU has imposed sanctions on Omurbekov for his role in the massacre in the Ukrainian city, where Russian troops are accused of killing over 400 civilians.
