Auto manufacturer Stellantis is stopping production at factories in Canada and Mexico and will temporarily lay off 900 workers from five US factories, following an announcement by Donald Trump about introducing a 25% tariff on all imported cars in America, according to  CBS News.

Beginning on April 7, Stellantis will halt production at its Windsor assembly plant for several weeks, with operations set to resume on April 21. The decision will affect 4,500 represented employees from Windsor.#

“While we have heard rumors about a potential shutdown, the company has stated there are multiple factors at play, with the primary factor behind the final decision being the announcement this afternoon from President Donald Trump about American tariffs,” said James Stewart, president of Unifor Local 444, in a social media post Wednesday evening.

In addition, the auto manufacturer will also temporarily stop production at its assembly plant in Toluca, Mexico for the month of April. The plant will halt production on April 7.

As a result of the pause, 900 workers from the Warren Stamping and Sterling Stamping plants in Michigan, as well as the Indiana Transmission Plant, Kokomo Transmission Plant, and Kokomo Casting Plant, will be laid off.
