A Russian couple has been sentenced to prison by a Polish court for spying on behalf of Russia, announced the Polish Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday, according to Reuters, as reported by Agerpres.
The man, identified as Igor R., was convicted by a court in the city of Sosnowiec (southern Poland) for participating in a scheme to send a booby-trapped parcel through a courier service.
Igor R. and his wife, Irina, were found guilty of providing the Russian secret services with information about Russian opponents living in Poland, as well as about individuals and institutions that assist them.
The man received a seven-year prison sentence, while his wife got one of three years.
European authorities were on high alert regarding booby-trapped packages after a series of explosions occurred in warehouses of courier companies in the UK, Germany, and Poland, in July 2024. Moscow was indicated as being at the origin of these incidents. However, Russia has rejected all accusations.
