The former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and the renowned economist Sergei Guriev have been added to the official list of “extremists and terrorists” by the Federal Financial Monitoring Service of the Russian Federation, in a new crackdown on government opponents in Moscow.

The institution included the names of Mikhail Kasyanov and Sergei Guriev on a list that already contains 19,131 individuals and 823 organizations, reports Reuters.

Since the beginning of the War in Ukraine, the evidence of this list has expanded considerably, with individuals or entities considered by the Kremlin to be involved in anti-state activities, writes Mediafax.

Mikhail Kasyanov was the Prime Minister of Russia in the first four years of Vladimir Putin’s rule, being dismissed before Putin won his second term in February 2024. Kasyanov joined the opposition, and as a result of the start of the War in Ukraine, he left Russia. In November 2023, he had already been designated a “foreign agent.”

Economist Sergei Guriev, former chief economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and currently dean of the London Business School, has openly criticized the regime in Moscow, encouraging Western governments to tighten sanctions on Russia.

The Federal Financial Monitoring Service of the Russian Federation or Rosfinmonitoring is the institution for combating money laundering and financing of terrorism, and once registered in this registry, Russian authorities can freeze the bank accounts of the targeted individuals.
