A German chassis and a French gun: the new heavy battle tank presented at the Eurosatory defense industry exhibition exemplifies the possibilities of the strategic partnership between Paris and Berlin, when the parties can agree, reports France24.

The Franco-German defense group KNDS has presented the tank in an emergency solution meant to replace the aging fleet of Leclerc tanks of the French army, while the joint project of France and Germany for the development of a next-generation tank is experiencing delays.

The increasing threat from Russia, combined with the growing reluctance of the American president Donald Trump to support Europe’s defense, is prompting European governments to hurry to strengthen their military capacity.

However, European cooperation in the production of defense equipment faces difficulties.

The launch of the new tank by KNDS at the Eurosatory defense industry exhibition near Paris, comes after last week’s decision by France and Germany to abandon their joint fighter aircraft program for the next generation FCAS (Future Combat Air System), after months of disagreements between Airbus and Dassault Aviation.
