The German authorities have thwarted an operation by the Russian secret services aimed at assassinating directors of defense industry companies supplying weapons to Ukraine. A Romanian woman is also involved in the investigation.
According to Militarnyi, preparations for the alleged attack began in December 2025, when a recruited agent photographed the area around the private residence of Stefan Thumann, the director of the German start-up Donaustahl, from the Bavarian locality of Straßkirchen.
According to the German press, Russia targeted the company because it provides Ukraine with reconnaissance drones and FPV MAUS drones.
For the organization of attacks, the Russian secret services would have recruited agents through the internet. Initially, Sergey N. supervised Stefan Thumann, but after he fled abroad, the information gathering activity would have been continued by the Romanian citizen Alla S.
Subsequently, in March 2026, the German authorities arrested both suspects, in Spain and in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since then, the director of Donaustahl has cancelled his public appearances and benefits from increased security measures.
Investigators do not rule out the possibility that Russia may have prepared another attack against a director in the defense industry of Bavaria, after explosives were discovered in a truck heading towards the region. Two suspects were arrested in Serbia, and contacts with Russian secret services were allegedly found in their phones.
