After six months of war, Iran’s leadership has regrouped around a hard core of generals and clerics who have long been part of the ruling theocracy. They are prepared for a confrontation that could extend with the USA and are determined to prevent the outbreak of internal disturbances.
The situation is entirely different from the initial hopes of American President Donald Trump to overthrow the Islamic Republic and his subsequent statements suggesting that “regime change” has brought to the forefront officials more willing to compromise.
Iran’s new leaders show little confidence in a potential deal with Trump, having been attacked twice while in negotiations, and may be preparing for another attack as the US replenishes its interceptor stocks, notes AP.
Furthermore, they have threatened to escalate the war, given the ongoing American blockade, and Trump’s plans for new sanctions threaten to suffocate Iran’s already severely affected economy.
“If (Trump) wants to do something, we will respond in a seismic way”, declared last weekend the new secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Mohsen Rezaei. In a post on X, he stated that “if the economic war continues, not even a drop of oil will be exported” from the Persian Gulf.
