The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova has voted to denounce the Agreement on the Establishment and Statute of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Thus, the country has essentially completed the process of withdrawal from the international organization.

The initiative to withdraw belongs to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau, which argued that the fundamental values and principles of the CIS are no longer respected. More precisely, it is about Russia’s violation of the integrity and sovereignty of several member states, including the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia.

The authorities in Chisinau also say that withdrawing from the CIS agreements is a natural step in the process of joining the European Union, notes radiochisinau.md. Although the Kremlin previously stated that the decision was not unexpected, Maria Zaharova harshly criticized it, invoking the fact that the population should have been consulted and mentioning that the administration in Chisinau cannot unilaterally choose the CIS agreements it will keep, and the final decision will belong to the member states of the Community.

In response, Igor Grosu suggested that Russian diplomacy identify a more presentable spokesperson both externally and from a cognitive point of view.
